A National Rail, Live in Conakry

On 22 July 2026, the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea (BCRG) launched NimbaPay, the country's national instant payment system. Operated by Guinéenne de Monétique (GuiM) under the leadership of the central bank, NimbaPay enables instant, secure and interoperable payments between participating financial institutions — banks, electronic money institutions and microfinance institutions alike.

The practical change is simple to describe and significant in effect. Sending money from a bank account to a mobile wallet, or paying a merchant by QR code, now takes seconds rather than days — and it works regardless of which institution sits on either end of the transaction. For a market where value has historically been trapped inside individual institutions, interoperability is the unlock.

"By launching NimbaPay, we are not just launching a technological platform. We are equipping our country with a national and sovereign infrastructure."

— Dr. Karamo Kaba, Governor, Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea

Built on Open Standards

NimbaPay is built on the open-source infrastructure of the Mojaloop Foundation, with strategic and technical support from the AfricaNenda Foundation and technical support from ThitsaWorks. That choice matters beyond the launch itself: open standards mean the scheme is not locked to a single vendor, that new participants can be onboarded against a published interface, and that the engineering knowledge required to run it can be built and held locally.

Guinea is the third country where AfricaNenda has supported the launch of a national instant payment system, after Rwanda and Liberia. According to AfricaNenda's 2025 State of Inclusive Instant Payment Systems report, Guinea now joins 31 African countries with an operational national instant payment system.

What It Changes for People and Businesses

For individuals, an interoperable rail removes a tax that has always been invisible but real: the cost of choosing the wrong institution. A trader paid into a mobile wallet no longer needs an account at the same institution as the person paying them. A family sending money across the country no longer routes around the network their recipient happens to use.

For merchants, QR acceptance changes the economics of taking digital payment. There is no terminal to lease and no card scheme to join — a printed code on the counter is enough to receive funds instantly into an account. For the smallest businesses, that is often the difference between accepting digital payment and not.

For financial institutions, the rail is a distribution channel. Any institution connected to NimbaPay reaches every customer of every other participant, which changes the calculus of what a small deposit base is worth.

BCT Corp's Role

BCT Corp is proud to have played a part in this milestone. Ecobank Guinea trusted us to connect the bank to the national switch, and it is now among the first institutions live on NimbaPay. Our teams designed and deployed the secure interface linking its banking systems to the switch: payee verification, instant transfers and QR merchant payments.

As a listed Mojaloop Service Provider, BCT Corp helps banks and financial institutions connect to instant payment systems — in Guinea and across the continent. Local teams, open standards, world-class infrastructure built here in Africa.

Our thanks go to Ecobank Guinea for its trust, to the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea for its leadership, and to the AfricaNenda Foundation and the Mojaloop Foundation for their support throughout.
